Possible Causes
  1. Fatigued brake shoe holding down springs
  2. Lack of lubrication

  1. Replace all hardware
  2. Lubricate brake shoe rest with moly lube.
 

Growling (Drum)

Possible Causes
  1. Worn out brake shoe linings
  2. Incorrect drum surface
  3. Fatigued brake shoe holding down springs
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  2. Replace or re-machine drum
  3. Replace all hardware

Leaks (Drum)

Possible Causes
  1. Leaking wheel cylinder
  2. Rusted brake line
  3. Damaged brake hose
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace wheel cylinder with manufacturer's recommendations
  2. Replace brake line with double wall steel tubing
  3. Replace hose with original equipment grade hose

Grabbing Brakes

Possible Causes
  1. Contaminated lining material (shoes)
  2. Leaking axle seals
  3. Fatiqued return springs
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  2. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations; replace axle seal; clean all brake components
  3. Replace all hardware

Black Dust on Wheel or Wheel Cover

Possible Causes
  1. Airborne brake lining material (pads / shoes)
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace lining with a ceramic pad

Vibration in Pedal of Wheel During Braking

Possible Causes
  1. Warped rotors
  2. Out of round brake drums
  3. Worn wheel bearings
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace or re-machine drums and rotors
  2. Replace or re-machine drums and rotors
  3. Replace wheel bearings

Leaks (Brake Area)

Possible Causes
  1. Worn out caliper seal
  2. Damaged brake hose
  3. Rusted brake line
  4. Contaminated fluid
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace with loaded calipers (consistes of rebuilt caliper, new hardware, new pads)
  2. Replace hose with original equipment grade hose
  3. Replace brake linings with double wall steel tubing
  4. Replace all rubber components and flush system with denatured alcohol

Grinding

Possible Causes
  1. Worn lining material (pads / shoes)
  2. Improper / wrong lining material
  3. Improper rotor surface
  4. Worn out hardware
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  2. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  3. Replace or re-finish rotor
  4. Replace hardware

Squealing

Possible Causes
  1. Worn lining material (pads / shoes)
  2. Wrong lining material (pads / shoes)
  3. Improper rotor finish
  4. Lack of lubrication
  5. Worn out hardware
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  2. Replace lining with manufacturer's recommendations
  3. Replace or re-finish rotor
  4. Lubricate all rubber components with silicone grease and lubricate all metal-to-metal contacts with moly lube
  5. Replace hardware

Spongy Pedal

Possible Causes
  1. Internal master cylinder leaking
  2. Trapped air
  3. Drum brakes out of alignment
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace master cylinder
  2. Bleed air from hydraulic system
  3. Replace or remachine drums and rotors; replace all hardware including self adjusters

Leaks (Hood Area)

Possible Causes
  1. Worn out seals
  2. Contaminated fluid
Possible Solutions
  1. Replace master cylinder
  2. Replace all rubber components and flush system with denatured alcohol
